An Appreciation for Our Mental Health

As a professional organizer and productivity expert with a background in social work, it was natural to notice the emotional struggles of my clients and those who needed to be clients. Our “stuff” represents us in the simplest of ways. The more we have and the less we can find means wasted money, time, space and energy.

This is what Barbara Hemphill has coined, SYSTEM™ – Saving You Space, Time, Energy, and Money. As a productive environment specialist, I help my clients to create and implement systems that work for them. Regardless of how much stuff anyone has, if it is interfering with your life, it is too much. Life should not be about what we own and therefore what owns us, but rather about how those things we have enhance our lives.

I work with clutter. My clients all have it and don’t know how to deal with it. They don’t know where to begin or even if it is worth it. What most don’t understand are the emotions behind it all.

Some have closets and rooms full of stuff from a deceased spouse. They know they need to go through it and donate or give away most if not all, but the nervousness of letting go of the stuff is really about the fear of forgetting their loved one.

Others are simply overwhelmed with life and the day-to-day happenings. Living from one moment to the next is the best they can do, and that is OK. But, the stuff is filling their home and their mind and the worry or embarrassment is such that they cannot find peace and security with letting go.
